When you first begin looking for a new camera, you may find yourself confused by the large assortment of cameras available in different price ranges, with so many different features. This selection can seem almost overwhelming at first.
However, your choice becomes much easier when you realize that there are essentially three separate tiers of camera – the point-and-shoot, the dSLR (digital Single Lens Reflex) and everything in between. Each of these caters to the needs of its intended audience. Once you identify which level of camera you are looking for, your choice becomes much simpler.
The first tier of digital camera is the point-and-shoot camera. This camera is the favorite of tourists and shutterbugs everywhere. They are generally the smallest and least expensive, and can make picture taking easy and fun for even the most technically challenged.
These cameras are characterized by their ease of use and simple features. You will find that almost all can also shoot video, and many offer features that can eliminate problems with the shot such as blurriness caused by a shaky hand or even the persistent problem of red-eye. With the cameras on this tier, you will find very few manual settings and almost none which offer options such as interchangeable lenses.
The top-tier of digital cameras is the digital SLR camera. These are the cameras used by professional photographers. These cameras would seem to have the least number of features, but they are designed to be that way. Everything about these cameras is designed to help the professional take the highest quality still photograph.
Some of the features you will find are a large number of manual settings, and a very large number of available lenses. You will also find these tend to feature adjustable shutter speeds and fast continuous shooting to make action photos easier to capture.
The middle of the pack encompasses everything you will find between the point-and-shoot and the dSLR. The features you will find in this range varies widely from one camera to another, and is often dictated by the camera’s intended audience.
Many of the middle range cameras are geared toward the tourist, and are for those who want a higher end camera than found on the first tier. They are usually higher quality cameras and have a higher number of features that make picture taking easier and faster.
Others are geared toward the hobbyist who is looking for something in a price range lower than the SLR cameras. These tend to have more manual settings and an array of interchangeable lenses available. They offer many of the same features as the point-and-shoot as well to make them useful for more everyday use.
So whether you are a tourist, a professional photographer, or just someone who loves to take pictures and wants the best of both worlds, there is a camera out there for you. And now that you’ve identified where you fit, it will be easier to find the right camera to fit your needs.
